5 Must-Know Tips to Make the Most of Ramadan as a Parent

Ramadan Mubarak! It is the holy month where Muslims fast from dawn to dusk, perform prayers and practice self-reflection. However… Ramadan after becoming a parent can be very different! You might be a little overwhelmed thinking about how you will prepare for Sahur and Iftar, take care of the children and complete the household chores without getting energy from food.

So, what can parents do to make the most of Ramadan? We’ve pulled together a couple of tips to help support your family throughout this month-long fast *wink*

  • Meal plan in advance

Thinking up what to cook for Sahur and Iftar is no easy feat, especially when fasting. Meal planning helps you save time and gives you a better idea of what you need to stock up on before going grocery shopping. Consider simple meals like porridge, oats or sandwiches to make your morning easier. Oh, don’t forget the dates too!

  • Take naps

You will only need a 10 – 20 minutes nap to rest your tired mind and body. The easiest thing to do is get a short booster nap while your little one is asleep! It is okay to let the housework slide for a day or two.

  • One day for mama, one day for papa

Get your partner to help out, especially during the weekend. Take turns to complete the kitchen tasks and give each other some kid-free time without guilt. Both of you get one day a week to catch some Zzzs!

  • Don’t overexert yourself

It is easy to be overwhelmed by all that’s going on – running errands, devoting extra time to prayer, doing laundry and taking care of the children. Pace yourself! Don’t be afraid to ask for help from your family and friends. Your loved ones truly want to help <3

  • Keep your kids busy

Keeping up with your kids’ endless energy can be exhausting. Here are 3 fun activities that your children will love doing throughout the month of Ramadan!

    – Arts and Crafts
Take out all your crayons, glues, colour pencils, and marker pens & get your kids into the festive spirit with the Ramadan crafts. DIY Raya cards, paper lanterns, Ramadan bookmarks – these fun & easy crafts will keep your kids occupied for a few hours!

    – Read together!
If you are looking for a way to explain to your child what Ramadan is, reading books is a great place to start. Not to mention, storytime is also an excellent way for family bonding!

    – Involve your kids in meal preparation
Cooking can be tiring after a long day of fasting. But what about an extra helping hand from your little one? Younger kids can help gather ingredients, mix ingredients in a bowl, and wash fruits and vegetables. Older kids can read recipes, measure ingredients, bake food in the oven, and set the table. What a perfect way to lift the Raya mood! *wink*
